Sheesh,

I know them geezers!  I gave up on the FF@ (where I "met" Byard and many of you) for a few years, went back to the same old and left for good maybe a year ago.  Much better content here but some nice folks back there.  Many o us old timers came here from there and some a "vagrants" (like Hans) who can be spotted on many sites if they have archives.  Tell them ole farts the Murf said hello.  Guess you weren't at Sister Sue's wedding either now, were ya son?

Subject: [VFB] FW: MurphClave on the Tuck (long)
Date: Wed, 9 Nov 2005 12:34:47 -0500
VFB (this is a summary of my recent 4 day trip to fish the
Tuckasegee River near Cashiers, North Carolina. The Clave was organized
on FF@ and the attendees are all members of that list. The Murph
mentioned in the post is not the VFB Murf. Steve Davenport is
on both VFB and FF@ as am I. Others on both lists
include Allan Fish, Jerry Caruso and myself. BTW- a Kreutzer
is full body fall in the water.

MurphClave on the Tuck-

Attendees-Host Mike Ray, Steve Davenport, Don Yelton,
Ben Benoit, Harold Jackson, Geoff Murphy and Me.

Highlights-

* 40- 50 fish to 20” each day double that for Don Yelton,
Mike Ray and Geoff Murphy.
• the food- Ben Benoit’s incredible Pizza Thursday night,
• Geoff’s crawdad beignet’s and corn & seafood chowder
• My omelet’s for breakfast, along with Geoff’s biscuit
and gravy
• Ben Benoit’s chicken barbeque
• Brunswick stew (made by Diane Ray for the clave)
• assorted other goodies and pastries including Geoff’s
Ooey-Gooey pie
• 3-4 exquisite cigars each day
• for the imbibers, a selection of beers and some vile tasting
scotch that others on the list have frequently praised
• Bullsh*t – great conversation and stories of past claves, fishing
trips and other life stories. Who Kreutzered and when, who caught what and
when, “Do you remember when”—well you get the drift.

Two stories that were repeated often included when our clave’s name sake-
Bill Murphy walking through the screen door onto the porch and Steve
Davenport’s incredible 10 point plus quadruple Kreutzer with 3-4 subsequent
“wallers” when trying to recover my wading staff that had floated
downstream. To quote Larry the cable guy-“if you don’t think that’s funny
your laugher is broke.”

• Don Yelton guiding Steve and I to several pockets loaded with trout.
• Mike Ray being my Gillie on Saturday and putting me on two or three
amazing holes.
• The annual Clave golf tournament.
• Watching Florida survive a serious scare from Vanderbilt. (Mike, a
Vanderbilt Alum would list this as a low light)
• Watching Miami TRASH Virginia Tech in a room filled with Hokie fans

Low Lights
• Ben Benoit’s room clearing, nose hair singeing triple fudgy fart
• My LDR of a truly 20+ inch magnificent Rainbow
• My Kreutzer
• Harold Jackson leaving early (hope all is well Harold)
• Diane Ray’s absence. (she was in Scotland)
• Steve Davenport breaking a rod.
• I was going to loan Steve my 5 wt and when I took it out of the
tube,
I discovered that a mid section had been crushed.
* My ridiculous attempts to put a 5x or 6x tippet into size 14 or
smaller hook eyes. How on earth do you guys do it ?

Of course the reason we were there was fellowship and fishing. Both
were there ion abundance. Mike had suggested that because of the timing,
the fishing should have very good. It was better than that. It was
spectacular. I used only a 3 wt and caught more Trout than I have ever
caught. Browns, brookies and rainbows. Biggest were in the 16-18 “ range.
Buggers, nymphs, wets, dries, they all worked.

A great unexpected pleasure was the temperature. 60-70 degrees in the day.
I had packed layers of fleece and never wore any. Just a shirt under my
waders was sufficient.

An even greater unexpected pleasure. PEAK FOLIAGE. Indescribable beauty.

A tremendous THANK YOU for Mike’s hospitality.

It was a fabulous clave.
