If your using a weighted forward fly line and if you feel to get the proper balance ,rod to reel ,you can cut off a few feet of the running line of the weighted forward line. You have to check to see if this really works ,the reel weight should equal to the rod weight for a good balance. Now that is something that never been printed before .Glenn

I agree with your rod balance theory.  I very often have a smaller reel
(less backing) on my rods.  I am assuming that there are some very
lite-weight large arbor reels that are reasonably priced.
