George,

As my first hooks were all Mustads and my friends expected me to use the proper # (never will happen), I tend to agree with you simply because it is an easier reference for me.

As for barbless hooks, we disagree.  I not only prefer them for their worth in saving fish but also my grandchildren who are beginning to enjoy sitting on Pappy's lap to tie a fly together plus the extra time in crimping barbs is not something I have time for, does not help as much when using beads and occaisional broken point issue.

Last night I was reprimanded for staying up working too late when I was sorting hooks.  I now have found the PERFECT hook box and will see if Lines End is interested.  I bought ALL the pill compartment boxes available and actually used them to sort but only ONE is a clear winner in every respect.  It is well made, inexpensive, holds sizes 6 (4XL) down, has a curved bottom, has 28 compartments, is easier to use than the pro hook box by far, is sized perfectly for kits, hooks can't migrate (individual snap lids) and more.

David.

I find that mustad is the one I use for comparing the difference between brands.  Also I use the Hook Book by Dick Stewart to make comparisons as the hooks shown are shown by size .  The book lists Mustad, Eagle Claw, Kamasan, Partridge, Tiemco and VMC.
This of course would only be useful if you have them in the original packing.  Myself I have been known to spend hours doing things like sorting hooks after classes in fly tying.

As for barbless crimp the barb why waste time looking for the right size in barbless.

However with the type of tying some people do for shows these shortcuts would not be useful. you're dammed if you do or don't do.

I know this is an oldie but I am trying to sort out thousands of hooks and my hook gauge isn't working per the bend/gap/shank ratios.  Yes, I know we now have wide gap(e) and all the combinations but how do you sort into a mere 80 bins over 100 variations unless they are distinctively different?  What do I do when a #10 standard dry from company X is the same as a #12 from company Y and both companies are considered respectable?

Then there is z X short versus w X long plus wire guage and so many variations that I am lost on just the basics.  Do I take an old standby like Mustand to determine my standard or go the other way around the globe?

Let's see... add barbless and you double the variation, wet versus nymph can equal the same hook except... and we bend them to get scud, stonefly, swimming nymph....   Arghhhhh!  Advice... ANYBODY!
