That's something, Tony.  Was it a Scott (Fred's favorite) rod blank?  How did you bump into Fred (his shop was in a small northern PA town)?  ...at a show, through his friend George Harvey or Dave Rothrock (lives in same town)?

Fred was the guy who first showed me Hoffman saddles (before Tom Whiting bought it) and introduced me to his dye room of a multitude of old washing machines he used.  What an operation.  He used to dye and blend most of his own brands of dubbing, dye Hoffman saddles and capes himself in colors even Whiting doesn't have (I do),   Sheldon Seale and the rest of his Canadian friends bought out all his snowshoe hare's feet at NEC VI (held at Pine Creek that year) plus a lot of other stuff.

Shame that Fred's back went so bad he had to sell out (shop then went out of business) and can't fish anymore.  Last time I saw him he looked to be in a lot of pain but still had a fly in his vise, a small delicate spinner under a bright tying light using organza which sparkled of the light.  The fly was a beauty.  To this day, I have quite a collection of Fred's materials (lots of variety but quantity of each has been decimated by use and sharing) and will bring you some to play with.

The first Graphite rod blank I ever bought came from Fred's shop. It is a 9' 3 wt.
