Dave
I have visited that site. I logged on there once for the post about female
fly tyers but I really didn't go back again. John McLain is a friend of
mine and he sent me there for that thread. I love John's website he did a
terrific job!! The ostrich herl I was dying yesterday was from a suggestion
of his to pick up feather dusters from Home Depot. I found a couple with
fine plumes mixed in. I was using them as an experiment to see if the dye
would look good so I could try dying some of my blue eared pheasant. Then I
forgot to throw some feathers in. I'm going to have to do it again. At
least I know it works.
I've heard not to use aluminum pans before but I didn't have a problem.
Honestly I forgot about it. I'm going to cruise through some of the flea
markets/antique centers and try to find an old steel pan for dying. I just
haven't gotten around to it yet. I may even find one at a cheap home goods
store.
Dying is so messy I really have to be desperate before I get around to doing
it. :) I'm bored now with it being so cold outside so I had to try it out
again.
The vinegar is definitely the key. That was a hint I got from Ron Alcott,
someone in Scotland shared it with him while he was visiting there. I was
looking at the Ostrich herl I dyed today in the sun and it's pretty amazing
how well it worked. I didn't expect that from RIT.
Warm Regards,
Deb

Hello Deb:
Your post on dyeing ostrich herl got me to thinking: Are you familiar
with the site: www.flytyingforum.com?
I highly recommend it to you. check out the salmon fly section.
Also I think you would love to see www.feathersmc.com. A great source for
materials and information/educational articles!
