The vinegar really does seem to be the key (along with starting out with
clean damp feathers).  The more I add the nicer the materials turn out.

With Rit and other fabric or food dyes; I have found that using all vinegar 
and no added water works best. If you use a plastic container and heat in 
microwave the dying process only takes a few minutes.
