Tony,

You hit the nail on the head and know me too well.  My point was (to any who thought me picking on Tony) that often we (who want to catch fish rather than people) tyers strive for a fly that attracts fellow anglers' eyes while the fish are looking for something that appears like food.

Byard was just telling me last week how a certain combination of colors would look very keen on a ceratin pattern (burgundy and amber was it?) but I doubt either of us could tell you whether it would catch fish (here Byard would say "of course it would Murf!") as it doesn't really match any natural I know of.  It WOULD look VERY attractive to someone at a tying show or in a shop I'll guess and that's what happens when our Listmeister has been tying at too many shows, he starts listening to the oooohhhhs & aaaahhhhs on his flys by human standards but when he fishes, he picks for the fish very successfully.

Anyway, most of us have stories about a fly getting torn apart by each fish and then becoming even more attractive as hackle unravels, etc.  As for Al's Fly, I'd rather has one torn up a wee bit as it looks buggier that way.  So Tony, tie me one and get it a bit ripped up so I have a "good" one when I visit to fish with.  ;-)

Then UGLY must be what catches fish, Did close to 500 fish on this fly this year. True a lot of them were Gills and several Carp long with some Smallmouths. Most were trout and I almost had forsaken the Chili Pepper for Al's fly this year.

You have to tie them ugly if you want to catch fish. If you tie them too neat, the fish will know you are an "EXPERT" and will not touch the fly.

Man, I crossed over a long time ago. BTW, That fly in the photo was a "used" fly. It had caught a bunch of fish. It was the only one I had to take some photos so I could send them to a friend on the list last spring.
