Tying instructions:
Lay down a base of thread. End at the hook bend.
Tie in some marabou about the same length as the hook.
Bring the thread to the center of the hook shank. (I usually tie in
a half hitch here.)
Fold the body over the shank and "PINCH" in the middle. (the more
you pinch the less the
body will have a tendency to rotate.) Make about five wraps around
the center of the
body. pull the thread tight on each wrap and end with a couple of
half hitches.
Fold about 2 1/2 inches of leg material in two and lay it along the
back of the body.
Take three wraps around the body. Tie off, between the body and the eye.
Cut the folded portion of the legs and pull two legs out to each
side. A drop of head
cement on the bottom of the fly will secure it.
Variations.
The "white spider" is usually tied in all white. However I like
yellow tail and red
thread. Some people swear by orange legs. I tie one version with
a gray body, yellow
tail and legs, and red thread. I call that version the confederate general.
You can experiment and find what works best for you. (Light colors
seem to work better
than dark.)
The legs can be cut as close as you want. In some cases I've left
the legs off. Some
are like beetles.
