Chuck, my experience with an automatic reel dates back to 1950. I had a Bass-O-Reno automatic, by South Bend. It was a great reel, but I sure lost a lot of bream until I learned not to pull the trigger when they hit my popping bug. :-P This reel is on Ebay today for $74.99

Chuck: I still have my old Perrine automatic reel which I bought when I was a
kid, but don't use it any more. The automatic rewind feature was handy
sometimes, but basically, if you use your reel to store the line that you are
not casting, a regular simple action reel may be just as easy to use. I did
take the cover off of mine several times to clean and re-oil it. You will
need to keep the spring under control when you take the cover off. The reel
should have a button on it to release the tension on the spring, but you will
still have to deal with the spring if you take it out. Good luck
