Here's a picture of a Chili that
looks exactly like the one Tony sent me. If he told me that it is in fact
that SPECIFIC fly that is on the picture, I wouldn't be surprised. The only
difference is the seventh hackle from the right should be a little bit less
angled backwards on mine... but on the other hand, that might have been caused
by rough handling in the mail. ;o)
A very good version was also born when I
taught my tying class how to tie it, with all the materials in black!! The
reason for that was just my material collection at that time... black was
the only way to make it uniformly colored. I, of course told the guys about the
original colors though. But an interesting fact is that a few of these guys has
still never tied it originally colored... the Black Pepper was so good that they
haven't felt the urge to change.
I also spoke to Murf on the
phone just before I was going out to send him the IOFF Swap flies. I
mentioned this and he seemed interested, so I rushed to rip the package open
again and packed down one to him too as another extra. I wonder if he has
tried it.........
I have done some experimenting with it
too (sorry Tony) and a good tail is also a quite fluffy bit of fox
tail. (Cutting the hairs all the way in at the patch and cutting the tips to
length.) With a not too fat amount, that will make it too compact
to move, it will still be very alive in the water... at the same time
as it doesn't tangle up in the hook bend as much as marabou can do.
Another trick I've used is the one a friend
taught me... to tie a teardrop formed monofilament loop that behind
the hook (a little bit angled down) that will lie UNDER the tail and
stop it from from falling down too far.
