Jimmy,
We called pillbugs 'doodle-bugs' in Louisiana, and
those trap-builders were ant-lions.
What I've learned from studying is that pillbugs
(also-called rolly-pollies) are terrestrial and can roll into balls.
Sowbugs are both terrestrial (co-habit with pillbugs) and aquatic, and cannot
roll into balls. The sowbug seems to have a much larger family of
different species, with members getting very flat, long and
segmented.
In studying photos of pillbugs and sowbugs (the
ground is still frozen outside), there are some differences in the way the legs
attach to the body, the overall shape and sectional profile, and the
segmentation end-plate details.

Subject: Re: [VFB] Sowbug vs
Pillbug?
THREE different kinds of bugs. 1. Sow bugs are aquatic.
2. Pill bugs are terrestrial - another name is Roly Poly, i.e. they roll
up into a little ball when disturbed. 3. A Doodlebug is the one that
makes the little sand craters and hides in the very bottom. When a small
creature falls into the crater, the Doodle Bug rushes out, kills and eats the
victim.
