OK,,,now that Ive got the sheets glued together,,I need some ideas on cutting out the cylinder shapes that are described in the Fly Tying magazine for cutting out yellow- jacket bodies. I believe they were calling it the hammer fly????But I do have the black, yellow, black, yellow and black all glued together and dried,,ends up being about 1/2 thick. I was considering empty bullet shells,,22cal, 38cal. and maybe 9mm. Any other ideas??

Thanks for your time

I use empty shell casings.  I've got a dozen or so.  .22, .270 Win, .30-30, 9 mm, .32-20, .32 Win Special, .357, .38 Special, .38-40, .44 Spec, .44-40, .45 ACP, .410, 28 ga, 20 ga, 16 ga and 12 ga. Some are my own, the rest I've picked up at the range.  I'll be ready for them snakes next time I go to Pine Creek, Murf.  The .22 would be best for ant bodies. If you could get a .22 Mag it would make life easier. A .30 or .32 cal would make a good bee body.  After that I use them to make foam circles for poppers, sliders, beetles etc. Knock the primers out, makes it easier to get the plugs or circles out. I brought a fairly extensive set of punches from Harry Steeves for $15 or so, but hardly ever use them.  Probably should sharpen them up and put them to work.  You can also make ants, using foam circles.  A .22 for the front and a 9mm or.32 for the back.
I have a couple of heart shaped punches I picked up at the craft store.  Good for poppers, sliders or lips for diving flies.  To cut out triangles, get yourself, if you don't already have one,
use a spark plug gapping tool.  Use the two thickest blades for your template.
