Fishing the Gunnison River in Colorado was the trip of a lifetime. The trip
started with a mile and ½ hike down to the riverbed from the crest of the
canyon. This is not a trip for the faint of heart.
After a heart attack, a four vessel by-pass and an aortic graft I thought maybe
I might have trouble making the hike. But with the help of two good friends I
made it all the way down. Thank the Good Lord I didn’t have to hike back up or
I would still be there or dead trying. This is something you must take into
consideration if you are planning a guided trip on the Gunny.

Also at this point I feel compelled to say something about the white water
rapids you will encounter on the river. I lost track of just how many there
were but to say the least it was an eye opener. Especially in the front seat of
the pontoon boat. With that all said let’s get to the fishing. I found out
real quick fishing for western brown trout is a lot harder than fishing for
trout say in Michigan. They are much more selective and it took me one day to
learn the technique. We were fishing a 5 wt. rod and a step down leader and
tippet. Fishing two nymphs about nine feet deep under a strike indicator and a
single small sinker. And the only time I caught trout was when the indicator
was straight down and the flies in the same position.
The second and third day was a total blast both from the rapids and the trout.
I caught 20 browns running from 10 inches to 18 inches and in that swift water
they were all I wanted that second day. The third day I caught probably 12-15
more. It was hard to keep track as the action was very good.

The scenery on the Gunnison River is as breathtaking as the rest of Colorado.
Shear canyon walls and huge rapids made it very exciting. Seeing the Bighorn
Sheep was an extra added attraction. A beautiful and graceful animal as he came
all the way down to the water’s edge just to eat the grass along the river.

So my friends I know this got quite long but that had to happen with such an
experience. I hope all of you get to make that float trip some day.
