Which manufacturer DonO? I like the Partridge hooks, except for the fact that they are brittle. What do you prefer??

Forged wet fly hooks are stronger (as opposed to dry fly or round wire hooks, especially the fine wire dries) The forged are heavier, thus less weight is needed. Some mfgs. sell hooks in many wire sizes, too. Short shank hooks are stronger (less leverage to bend the point or wallow out a hole in the fish's mouth) Tempering is crucial- stronger hooks may be brittle but resist bending better. Compare an old forged Mustad with today's wire hooks, bend in a set of jaws, and compare strengths. One method I use for the large trout here is to tie size 26 flies on size 24 hooks, and so on. Doesn't seem to matter to the fish, but I get better hook-ups and holding power. This is even more crucial with dries, as wire dry-fly hooks bend easily when a big fish just takes off upriver. When I fish the Green River, I tie all the dry fly patterns on either wet fly hooks, or one size up wire hooks, depending on the pattern.
