I have a best friend who was dying from a rare lung cancer (he is a non-smoker, he just won the bad luck lottery). His last chance for life was a total lung transplant, and about five months ago he got the bitter-sweet call that a pair of lungs were available. The surgery was flawless and (with the exception of the anti-rejection medication he will take for the rest of his life), he is as good as new.

I mention this because I received their annual Christmas letter today, and found out that the donor was a 58 year old man from Texas. I quote from his wife's letter:

"It is now Christmas. Our tree has an added decoration this year. On the top branch sits a flag bearing a lone star. It represents a place of great significance. It symbolizes a gift given under the most difficult circumstances. Its star... is an unknown hero with a forever-place in our family"

I just thought you Texans out there might enjoy hearing her thanks.

Merry Christmas,

Tom Davenport
