Of all of the furs I've tried for hare's ears, I like the grey squirrel body
hair (very top part) the best.  It's really spikey, rope-dubs very well*,
and like others have found, it doesn't seem to matter if it's ribbed or not.
Nice part is , it takes between a minute or two per fly to tie.  I use
bead-heads and skip the lead body-weight.  I do have one version that works
well for me and that's tying a few strands of pheasant tail to the tail end,
along with a wire ribbing.  After the tail is roped, this pheasant is
brought forward and tied down, then the ribbing is applied.  Makes a
two-tone very segmented tail.  THen the rest of the fly is normal, although
sometimes I throw in a couple of white rubber legs as a 'let's see' option.

It does 'shed' a bit, guard hairs making their escape, but blending with a
little rabbit (20%) helps it hold together and dyed rabbit can give it some
shades.
