Hi Allan, I feel the real color of the Hare Ear Nymph has been lost ,due to
commercial package dubbing. The Hare Ear is just that ,hair clip off the
ears and the poll ,that's the part between the ears. This comes out a darker
brown . But if you add the whole mask ,this color when blended is called
"Sandy Poll " the color of dried sand and I do not mean white sand. Many
years ago we used blue heron or mallard wing for the winded case , but the
best to match the insects, is pheasant tail. .The original tail is a little
of the hare ear poll but I like to use dyed pheasant tail the match close to
the body color .And still a gold wire rib.
A favorite wet fly that I tie ,I like mixing dark claret yarn in my dark
hare ear fur. #8 -3x fine wire hook ,weighted ,copper wire rib ,no tail ,and
a few turns of grouse hackle in front. Brown spotted hen will also work.
Now if your looking for color ,olive, black, yellow, etc.there is nothing
buggier then gray squirrel.or other squirrel fur. So for a range of natural
nymph.color you can tie in the style of a Hares Ear Nymph. Now there is so
many different types of how to tie a Hare Ear Nymph .

Anyone know of a suitable substitute, or color that will work?
Cat fur works good. Gently take a brush to a long-haired cat (Maine Coon
cats are perfect). The cat will love it and you'll get all the dubbing
you need. Makes great nymph bodies.
Or you can trying separating fur balls if you prefer.
And on that thought, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
