Well, I found the step by step instructions for the Hare's Ear... they were already on my web page! Unfortunately I didn't find them until I had actually created a NEW web page. Sigh. Take a look at either, I couldn't get myself to delete the second one after spending an hour to find the pictures.

Just get a Hare's mask, probably the best value in fly fishing.

The two flies I use the most when nymphiing are a BHGRHE and a BHPT.

Here is how I tie the Hare's Ear:

Hook: 6-20
Bead: Spirit River Gold, regular and Tungsten
Thread: Black
Rib : Gold or Holographic Gold
Tail: Hair from cheek of Hare's Mask
Body: Spirit River cream Dazeltron(mostly) but sometimes I blend hair and fur clipped from the mask with the dazel-tron for a more buggy fly. Dazel-tron is made of Antron but is finer than Spirit river's regular Antron dubbing. I also like to use their Hare-tron which is already blended. Collar: For this I pull hair right off the hairs ear. These are short dark hairs and I just dub them parallel to the string. Then I wrap the dubbed string behind the bead and the ear hair flares out making a nice hair hackle. (I'l sometime use this same technique to put a little hair behind the peacock collar on the PT.)

After I have tied off behind the bead, I take an old tooth brush with the bristles cut short and brush the whole thing back toward the the bend.

I'll sometimes tie this in larger sizes and use it as a streamer.

I know I sound like a Spirit River rep. (I'd like to be, but I'm not). I just like their products.

Somewhere I have page showing the steps in pictures, if I find it I will post it on my website.

Now the question. I don't have any Hares Mask to make a real Hare Ear.
Anyone know of a suitable substitute, or color that will work?

The size I tie and use the most (and therefore have the best results with)
is 14, size 12 would be next. But I tie them and use sizes 10-18.

The pattern I follow is the one in Dave Hughes' book "Essential Trout
Flies." But then, for some reason (senior moments) I forget to tie in the gold ribbing on about half of them. Those seem to work just as well. (Which
is further proof of what's said in the quote, I suppose.) :-)
