Shakespear do some OK rods, not fancy but made with the same carbon blanks
as a number of mid-range rods, also, dont know if available in US but,I have
a fladen vantage 8 ft #4 travel rod that i got new for 16 pounds (about 30
dollars) + postage
It was bought to keep in the work van .. just in case .. casts pretty good
wieghs very little and
is expendable. That all said it would be a nice first rod for your son.

Ok, Nates birthday is on the 11th, he'll be 7, and I think it's time to get
him his own fly rod (I know this cause he tells me all the time : ) ). So
any recommendations for rods? Need to keep it kind of on the low cost side.
