You DO hold it with your fingers when cutting it. You just have to squeeze tight. Just go to a place with the longest possible gaurd hairs, and cut it VERY close to the hide. That's it. And don't let that squeeze go until finished combing all the underfur is out. No pain, no gain, lol. mark..... p.s. course if your not into pain, lmao..........there's always Mink gaurd hairs, Badger, Muskrat, Fox, or any number of substitutes that are much easier to grip......lol "   Substitute(s).....for a fly tyer, what often turns a nightmare into a dream come true...........

Mark: I hair a very fine, tiny comb, that I got from, ready??? One of My 2 yr old grand daughter's doll set LOL.. Works great when you  have enough hair (like deer hair) to hold onto...Anyway, if I don't hold the hair to cut it with my fingers.. what do I hold it with to get it to comb out the underfur, and then get it into the stacker??? Thanks, Chuck

Chuck, don't even try to pull out gaurd hairs with your fingers..........unless you have masochistic tendencies, lol. Just cut out a small section of the mask, (sometimes i like it up around the ears) and then take your comb, (some fly tyers's tool companies make them, but you can find a perfectly addequit one at the pharmacy in the womens make up section), and comb out the underfur leaving you with exactly what you need. DUH! You can then stack the gaurd hairs if you like, (i never do) using that really neat, little tiny Renzetti hair stacker. That thing is so cool you can actually stack individual CDL barbuels (sp?, trimed off  the rackis/stem hackle, with it), for making really nice looking Caddis wings. Prolly mispelled rackis as well.........but who's countin'? When speaking of any feather, stem is actually an incorrect term, it's rackis....correctly spelled of course. lol, mark.....

Folks: I'm starting to think that the Hare's Mask I bought came with a "crew cut" LOL... I was trying to start tying the Gold Bead Hare's Ear Nymphs tonight, and I cut up my dubbing, and it came out good. But when i started trying to get some tail hair from the Mask, they are sooo short, I can't even grip them  to comb out all that underfur in my fangers.. Is the fly still called a Hare's Ear Nymph if I use "raccoon mask" guard hairs for the tail??? LOL.. Thanks, Chuck

Wait.. I just went back and read Jimi's post here in red, so with the Any variation, I guess raccoon tail is OK , but, if I wanted to use the hare's ear hairs for a tail, how do I get them long enough?? Or did I just get a real short haired mask like I said???

"15 flies, any variation or size of the Hares Ear.
Due date end of February?"
