Yes, and it is not only a food dye stuff, but also a spice, imparting a somewhat bitter taste. In fact saffron is the pollen from a certain crocus, harvested by dusting off the stamens (I think that is the correct english word for the male organs of a flower).

Safflour is a much cheaper substitute that is almost indistinguishable as a dye, but, I'm told, not as a spice.
