Well... I have a box filled with what my fishing buddy and I call "Whores of Babylon" flies, big, ugly experimental flies that we occasionally tie on to see just how stupid fish can be. I had a REALLY nice collection of Wooly Bugger and streamers that fell off the back of my pontoon boat somewhere in Lake Powell. (That was an adventure in itself, me with my 3 horse power Tanaka motor dodging water skiers, crotch rockets and large pleasure boats of every size crossing in the small channel opposite Halls Crossing Marina).

I have two boxes filled with flies that I will never fish that I have gotten from friends and swaps. I use them when I want to copy a tasty looking fly.

But I'm not a big believer in toting a bunch of fly boxes. Simplicity on the stream is my (yet unrealized) goal.

By the way, I forgot a few flies in my new box: I also have some Elk Hair Caddisess (or is it just Cadi?) and another compartment full of Renegades, my favorite mountain lake fly.

Also in the second box are some wet flies.

Subject: [VFB] What's in your fly box?

I came upon a clearance sale and bought a new fly box, the kind made of aluminum with the glass covers on one side for dry flies and a foam patch on the other for nymphs. I took the opportunity to reorganize my flies with the intention of just getting the flies I use all of the time in this little box, and sticking the less used flies in a second box (I use a chest pack that has one main pocket that drops down for a primary fly box and a second zip up pocket for an additional box).

Anyway, this is how it panned out: One flip up compartment stuffed full of BHPT sizes 16-20, a second compartment filled with BHGRHE from 12 to 18, a third filled with parachute flies sizes 14 through 22, the fourth with traditional Adams style flies 14 -20, another compartment filled with scuds, and another filled with misc midge larvae. One flip up compartment is still empty, and on the foam side I have a couple dozen RS2's in various sizes.

These are the flies I use 90% if the time when fishing local streams.

In the second box I have Prince Nymphs, San Juan worms, some large foam flies (hoppers, cicadas, stonefly imitations) some Pale morning Dun's, a flock of Royal Wullf's and some stimulators) and some streamers.

What is in your "most used fly" box?
