Chuck, here's how I do it. I hope that this makes sense. I take a small feather (hen, quail, pheasant body, whatever I have) and cut a "V" into the top by snipping the stem part of the way down. I then set the "v" on top of the hook, put a couple of loose wraps around it, adjust it for length and tie it in. trim the rest and you're done. it's way easier than dealing with all of those fibers plus you know that you have an even amount on each side.
