I realize that the original post requested ways to tie in a beard, and
some good information has been provided, but on the whole I find I only
do beards when I do not have suitable hackles/feathers to wind a
collar. I much prefer the look this approach yields. Am I alone in
this?

No, I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Besides, it's MUCH easier. And I always go for 'easy'. That way I
don't get as mad when I try for those flying fish in the top of trees.
