That was a very interesting trout, Tony, and comes with a story. I
was visiting my brother in the DC area. He took a day off so we
could hang out together for a day, and I suggested he decide what he
would like to do most, and I would just tag along. My brother worked
for the Department of Wildlife Resources at the time and was a
Wildlife biologist, so he wanted to take his small aluminum boat up a
local river to look at the waterfowl there. I had my fly rod along
and figured I might as well take it and see if I could scare up
anything.
Well, this was a classic warm water river, as slow moving as a lake
with lots of plant growth. I had never fished a warm water river
before (other than our outing to Crooked Creek at Sowbug 2004 but
that didn't count because it was March, the water was still cold, and
none of us even saw a fish). Anyway, I figured I would just fish
with a mohair leech and see what would happened. What happened at
first was nothing at all.
After and hour or so, we stopped and were looking at a Great Blue
Heron. I had quit fishing and let my sinking line hang in the water
behind the boat. When we decided to move on, I quickly pulled my
line up and suddenly got a strike! I couldn't have been more
surprised if I had caught a fish in a parking lot. I had no idea
what it could be, but I could tell it had decent size. Up came the
"trout" you see pictured in the net.

Well, I tried doing the same thing again, and caught another. Then a
third. My brother was amazed, he didn't think there were any
catchable fish in the river. I was amazed too, I had never caught a
catfish on a fly.
I cast out a fourth time, let it settle, and gave the rod to my
brother. He started stripping it in fast, and he hooked up! We
ended up catching six catfish in six casts. On the seventh we
caught a yellow perch. All in all, it was a fun experience and a
great memory.
