Howdy all from the Great Republic of Texas! I am still a member here at VFB, but I very seldom make any posts. Of the few topics that are posted here, there are either so many answers already that adding my 'me too' would just be more jibberish, or the topics are about something that either I cannot do, attend, enjoy, or otherwise participate in, so I don't answer those posts either...even though I do enjoy reading most of them.
Of course, then there is the fact that I don't initiate topics that I am interested in, so I am as guilty as anyone about the lack of discussion here on this board. In my opinion, the board started to become fragmentized when that new special interest group (SIG) about flyfishers started here in VFB that only had members that met a certain critera. Hats were even made for it IIRC. That group, even though it was mostly made in jest, alienated me, and I am sure other members who hadn't been born with a tying vise in their mouth, so to speak. When that SIG started, for several months, most of the posts were about it and not much of anything else. I sort of lost interest in VFB then because I was/am pretty much a newbie and even though I have been a member here for a few years now, I still haven't tied many flies...most were for fly swaps either here or on other groups. I noticed that several of the regular members quit posting here, for whatever reason. Then came a surge of posts that were either from or about alter-egos and not much about flytying. I became less interested because of it. Then the worst of all that could of happened, happened. Murph died. Wow. What a blow. He would keep the list motivated even when it was slow. In fact, he would ask questions that he knew the answers to, just to get members to post. Of course, maybe this list has run it's course. Maybe it is just in a normal lull at this stage of it's life. Maybe the members have moved to other venues, or even changed hobbies. I find that I am spending just as much time online, but in other areas of interest to me. Who really knows what is happening here. Not me. The things I mentioned above are just my opinions and observations, nothing more. If no one else agrees with me, that is OK, if they do, that is OK too. One thing is for sure, this discussion has sparked some activity here at VFB. Maybe this is what VFB needs to get going again. I sure hope it doesn't go to a forum format though. I would probably visit it less often. At least here in the email format, I do receive all the messages sent to the list. To me, forums are just too time consuming...but, different strokes for different folks.
