Here is a great story. 18 - 20 years ago I was tying flies for a couple of shops. I called my little enterprise "Little Creek Flies". Had the business cards, and some hats printed up, etc. I tied a variation of a Griffith's Gnat ( peacock, with tinsel and brown hackle instead of grey) and gave some to a friend who was going to fish on the Boulder Mountains. He was using this new fly, and he was the only one on the lake that was catching fish. This went on for a while, and an old guy walked over to him and asked him what he was using. My friend gave him two of these flies, and one of my business cards. A week later the guy called me and asked me to tied him a dozen. The next year he called and ordered two dozen. Two years later, after I had changed jobs and moved my family back to central Utah, he called me and ordered nearly $100 worth of this single pattern. That was 13 or 14 years ago. I never heard from him again. But this summer I was fishing a remote stretch of Lower Fish Creek, and met an old feller who was having no luck at all. As we visited, I asked him where he was from. He said, "Hooper, Utah". I told him my story about the man who had ordered so many flies from me long ago. He said that it wasn't him, because he had just started fly fishing two years ago, but maybe his partner would know who it would be. About 30 minutes later here comes another man walking down the creek, and said he was looking for his buddy. I asked him of he was from Hooper, and he said yes. I started to tell the story of the flies, etc. and he got this big grin on his face. It was the man I had been sending the flies to years ago, and we finally met by accident on that beautiful stream. The fly is soooo easy to tie. standard dry fly hook from #12 - 16. I tie in two peacock herls, narrow tinsel and one brown hackle all together at the top of the bend. Half-hitch, then twist all the materials into a rope. On my Norvise this takes about 1.75 seconds. Then wrap the rope forward from the bend along the hook shank to the eye, tie off and whip finish. Buck watched me do this at the Sowbug two years ago. We were calling it the "one minute midge". Sorry this story took so much space. It's all true.
Larry Johnson Springville, Utah >>> "DonO" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 11/14/2007 10:09 PM >>> If you guys will remember, we had a bunch of lists: JimmyD's Renegade list- Jimmy made this list up to celebrate the wack-o's on the list- and anyone could be on it if they were short of perfect The IOFF 'International Order of Fanatic Flyfishers'- This list was for anyone who loved flyfishing and flytying- anyone. Still is open. Still have 'Ye Rooles' for anyone who joins. The Charter Members of the IOFF- I think it was for the first 30, then 40, then 50 who signed up, and we would have made it 60 or 70 or 80... The Board Members of the IOFF- all voted in by VFB'ers, and of course all tongue-in-cheek. I've been on the list almost from day one, and I like the format. And I'll probably get flamed and moved up on the renegade list, but when we've had discussions over the years about list 'improvements' or list silence, the most vocal complainers are the most silent lurkers. How can anyone who just lurks feel like they've been left out??? THere's not one person on this list that has to lurk. Period. Anyone with any level of expertise can do a little research about flies and fishing on the net, find something interesting, and post the url and make a comment or ask a question. Anyone. Find a picture of a baitfish, or an insect- post it and ask for advice on how to imitate it. Easy enough. Tell a fish story, post a fishing trip review. Read a magazine article- post a review. Yeah, it's called effort. I've been really busy with work, but I am always on line and always see all posts, so I like this format. If you guys don't like the alter-ego antics, I'll be happy to quit. It's no fun if it's not appreciated, for sure. It was only to spice up the comments with a little diversity and humor. Had a few others on board with their own alters, and Murph was right in there. I still miss him. We had lots of comments on Whiting hackles and hackle co-op swaps. What's happened there? THe co-op is still listed on the VFB. I'm still demonstrating the rope-dub at shows, and many times to tiers who think they know how to do it. I've added many variables to the technique, and have enough to fill about 5 cd's with instructions. Those who have mastered it have made it their only style of dubbing. And if you're still bored with the list, host a swap or two. Make it for 30 tiers. That'll keep you busy for a little. This list is only what we make of it, and it takes effort, not lurking. You just had to basically be nuts. I would argue that life is happening to the list... - I know for me I have had 2 promotions and lots of extra travel - Nick has 2 kids now - Jimmy is doing all kinds of writing activities - Jimi has some health issues - DonO is doing a ton of stuff On Nov 14, 2007 5:18 PM, Dan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hey Jimmy; I just seem to remember that one had to either be in so many swaps, or had to have tied so many different types of flies, or something. I have slept since then and can't remember everything about it! ; ^ ) I thought that you guys were at least talking about hats or shirts or something. But then again, I have slept since then. I just remember that I didn't join because it seemed I didn't meet some of the requirements.? I don't post much here, so I am as guilty as anyone about not keeping the list active. Glad to see some activity here this week. Hopefully it will continue. Tight lines, saltydan Dan Harriman Orange, Texas --- "Jimmy D.
