It makes sense and I usually also do it in an angle. On this one I obviously
slipped. My excuse is a very uncomfortable position of tying and lack of
concentration. The sequence was done before the making of a monopod for the
camera and it was standing on a plastic box between me and the vise. Didn't
see very well and couldn't concentrate much either as the camera was on a
time lapse and all my concentration was focused on the PC monitor (view
finder and camera countdown).
This kind of "remote tying" is the reason to why it turned out this bulky,
since I actually DID get a gap between the cuts because of this. You don't
have to look closely to see the bulk under the fly, just by the point where
the calf has been cut. This should not be there since there shouldn't be any
material under there causing it. Well, there aren't any either. The clump is
made of spread out thread wraps, trying to fix the gap on top of the shank.
The way I usually do it is first doing a straight cut that lets the calf
butts fall down and meet the tail butts. Then I trim it forward to even them
out with eachother. But this time I got stressed when I saw the gap and all
I could think of was to fix it the best I could with thread. I didn't even
think about that I could have done it better by trimming the hairs down
first.

And then comes also the fact that flaws ALWAYS come like a punch in the face
when seen on a computer screen. I didn't think it looked that bad in the
vise. But I'm not re-making the sequence because of it. No way José... ;o)

Nick: I like your tutorial for the Royal Wulff. I have a suggestion for
step 19. After the wings have been secured in position, and you are ready
to clip the butts of the calf hair, don't clip them at a right angle to the
hook. Tip your scissors and clip the butts on an angle, tapering toward the
tail. If you clip them in this manner, you can help shape the tapered body:
thicker behind the hackle, and thinner at the tail. Hope this makes sense.

Quote from the FAOL tying demo: "Hair wings take a bit of practice to get
them exactly right."

I did a step-by-step focusing just on a specific hair wing technique, using
the Royal Wulff only as a "model" for it. (Thought a beautiful pattern would
make more people want to try the hair wing trick.) It was done for our
fly-fishing club's site, so of course in Swedish. But I have been working on
translating them anyway and this morning I started on the Royal Wulff. Well,
now I'm done and it's printable. 27 steps... is that enough? ;o)

Seen note by Pacres' the other day also. Interesting.. the "Twelve Flies of
Xmas Theme". (Gotta make a note of that one!).

Anyone search 'Royal Wulff' in YouTube.com yet? I suspect there might be a
video demo there, and or, look in the on
demand section of 'Angler's Art'- PBS series here -
http://www.kwsu.org/KWSU_NWPR/OnDemand/OnDemand.aspx.

And... finally.. there is an actual FAOL tying demo here:

Aye, long tyes.. but a worthy pattern. I never leave home without them. =)

Not that I'm aware of. The nice thing about that site is the detail each of
the steps goes into. The awkward part is there are so many steps. So an
FAOL or other more consolidated page would print better, but might not give
you the detail.

To answer your other question, for the swap I would worry more about the
color of the materials than getting them "right". As you pointed out,
depending on the pattern recipe you use there will be different materials
listed. So for the wings, either white calf tail or calf body hair will
work, neatly stacked and evenly divided. The body hair, which is
straighter, will stack easier, but either could be "correct". Same for the
tail. I think moose hair is the most commonly called for, but dark brown
deer or elk hair will work, too. For a fly to fish, just getting close
usually works. The fish don't care as much as tiers do :)
