Right, naturally most codecs include this up-front (in Daala it is the very first bit of the packet). But the other feedback I've received for MCUs is that it is often useful to know these things without decrypting the stream, which makes the header extension an attractive solution. Of course, if we know the header extension will be used, we can possibly avoid redundantly transmitting some of that data in the codec.
