Analog yes, but you still need to be able get the diff signal from the
38 khz carrier and that I think requires some active components.
A couple of transistors or as I beleive in the very first FM-stereo
recivers, a tube.

NICAM is a digital system. 14 bit resolution with 10 bits sent at a time.
Either the msb or lsb depending on signal level. This of course requires
a rather sofisticated decoder circuitry.
