I doubt they know what is going on.  Basically the old code (i2c-old.c
in current kernels, i2c.c in 2.2.x) should do the same as the
i2c-algo-bit.c.  But looks like there is a small difference somewhere
which makes it work differently on some hardware configurations.  Hard
to nail down if you can't reproduce it ...
