mmm...a better guess is maybe the bttv module that was currently loaded needed to be unloaded/reloaded? i've had no problems with needing a reboot to get xawtv working properly. you can unload/load modules (after editing the /etc/modules.conf) by simply doing ie: rmmod bttv modprobe bttv > came up in stereo mode.
