Your "caminfo" link did the trick. I followed the links to
http://www.linux-usb.org, specifically the USB-HOWTO and discovered
that I needed the "usb-uhci" loaded too, As soon as it was
"modprobe'd", the camera light blinked and a check of
"/var/log/messages" revealled that the camera was alive and well:

Thanks very much for the help. For the benefit of any other readers
having similar problems, I recommend reading the "gqcam" INSTALL file,
and also the USB-HOWTO. It seems that all the necessary information
is available, its just a matter of digging deep enough.
I sincerely appreciate your help. I'm looking forward to lots of
experimenting with this "gadget".
