Are you talking about bttv2 from sourceforge?  Ugggh, that seems
very outdated.

Hopefully you're actually using bttv-0.8.83 from
http://www.bytesex.org/bttv which seems to handle
the v4l option fine for me., including a nice new
MAKEDEV script that updates some of the previously
messy dev files.  (though you might have to do a
"mv /dev/video /dev/video.bakup" beforehand if you
want to save some old DVD device files.)

And versions of xawtv from 3.68-3.70 are all working
fine with this setup as well.
