Right, but as per the notes at http://bytesex.org/patches/:

  videodev
      my videodev changes:
  
          * allows v4l drivers to use a struct file_operations directly.
          * Adds a generic ioctl wrapper for ioctl arg userspace copying.
  
  You need this one for bttv 0.8.x and saa7134.


So one does need to apply the videodev patch, which does modify kernel
source which means you need to build a new kernel before you can get
bttv 0.8.x working.  I was going to try to get videodev from the
kernel source tree (matching my kernel) to patch and build outside the
kernel with Gerd's above mentioned videodev patch however...

It would seem that this v4l2 tarball is that already.  Am I correct?
If I build and install the above tarball, I can build and install bttv
0.8.x?
