Ok. I'm currently working on the DirectFB v4l video provider and what it would really need is syncing on every field. I suppose that when capturing the fields to separate buffers that will happen. However I would like to use the overlay mode when possible to avoid copying stuff around. Can v4l2 provide syncing in overlay mode?
