the "radio" trick basically gives you mono sound directly from the tuner
chip -- which is a workaround for the non-working sound decoding of the
saa7134.

The latest saa7134 snapshot (see http://bytesex.org/snapshot/) does
print a dump of the (hopefully) relevant registers in case the carrier
detect didn't work ...  (audio_debug=1 insmod option makes the driver
more verbose about the detection thing).
