Maybe that someone on linux-fbdev will have more ideas. fbtv/bttv can
stress voodo hardware and if hardware and/or driver cannot cope with
write accesses to videoram during middle of some accelerated operation,
or interprets such data as accel commands instead of data... (if your
voodo hardware has 'Designed for Windows2000' stick, it should not happen,
there is requirement about complete independence of raw access and
accelerator in that document).
If you have SMP system, you can try running
while true; do dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/fb0 bs=1M count=2; done
in one task and some other console operations ("yes LLLLLLLLooooongLine")
in another task (kill rc5des/dnetc/seti before doing this). If machine dies,
either tdfxfb or hardware itself is broken... If not, either voodo hardware
or your motherboard chipset is broken... (if you have UP, I have no idea
how to test it with standard tools)
Last variant is overheating - in my computer if I close cover and there
is heat (cca > 23 C) in room, after some minutes of watching TV machine
completely freezes. Complete death - no numlock, no ping... After some
time (30-120 secs) bt848 or i440bx cools down and machine returns to
life. After some minutes again complete death...
