First half of first line of top field is black, same second half of last
line of bottom field (at least in PAL). Also the framerate will be half in
this situation, so time measuring should detect this.

Never noticed this, but im using bttv-v4l2. Even Justin says it is worse, I
suggest you give it a try.

The incorrect tunner type could be the reason (probably not, but who can be
sure) and I had bad times with the bttv forcing autodetected tuner over
explicitly specified.
