I'll just go ahead and recommend Movie Maker along with those who already have. It's free, unlike some others I've never had it crash on my machine and though it has limitations that you might start cursing over later it is an excellent program with all the features a beginner needs. Nerissa says Movie Maker (MM) only creates WMV files. That is untrue. MM can eort your video as DV-AVI so you can take a high quality version of your video if you want to burn it to DVD or whatever (or if you want to transcode into Quicktime). MM has more effects and transitions that you ever need. Including the Star Wipe that Homer Simpson is so fond of. MM is limited on tracks. The most common place you will run into trouble with this is if you want to add background music and a voice-over narration to a clip. To do this in MM you will need to pre-mix the music and the voice-over. I would most definitely begin with Movie Maker. You can use it forver and never feel its limitations.
