You mean the way that vinyl records killed off live bands? Or the
way that cassettes killed off FM radio? Or the way that in internet
killed TV? Or the way that the VCR killed the movie business?
I'm not picking on you, though. :) It's just that lots of times
these devices and technologies come along that people think will be a
huge shift in the way that people do things, and it never happens that
way. Why? These great big media companies have deep pockets. If any
innovation comes along that could seriously threaten their financial
model, they just buy it and co-opt it into their own.
From my list above, the invention of records, tapes, internet and
VCR's did soften the markets they were thought to replace, but then came
back strong as ever. VCR's were looked at by the movie industry as the
invention that was going to totally destroy Hollywood - they even sued
Sony over the invention of the VCR. Now look, Hollywood was revitalized
by home video giving them a new market they never had before. TV was
looked at as the thing that would kill off radio for good, but then
radio listenership increased with inventions like the car radio, the
Walkman, the boombox, etc.
Portable video devices aren't going to disassemble the monolithic TV
network corporations. For one thing, consumers have to actively seek
out programming for their devices rather than just sitting down to see
what's on. I think that devices like the iPod will turn into another
delivery device for TV networks. We are just fortunate that anyone with
a camcorder and a website can share that space in a small way. I'd like
to be wrong about TV corporations losing some of their power, but
history seems to indicate that they will be running things for a good
long time.
