Not only do you need the audio to be in their format, ruling out
playback on a rangte of devices, but it costs you money for every
single download of your material etc.

I can see why some companies would like this stuff, but theres nothing
in it for the end users but hassle and DRM/privacy concerns, and I
would imagine many podcasters being hostile to this stuff.

The only reason they have any chance whatsoever is because their
format is already supported by ipod & itunes etc due to its use for
audiobooks.

I dont expect to see the same happen with video in the next year or 2,
because there is no existing video format thats in wide use that
supports this stuff, and mp4 is getting to be the standard by its
inclusion as the format of choice in a range of playback devices.
There may well be attempts to try, but the odds are more stacked
against them and I dont even know that this audio stuff will takeoff,
not at those prices anyway.

Apple could probably achieve a simlar result using itunes without the
need to use different formats. itunes seems to know how many times Ive
watched/listened to something through it. If it counts the number of
plays on the ipod and this info is transferred back to the computer
when the ipod is docked, its possible Apple could harvest this
information.

As a consumer something bothers me about others knowing how many times
Ive watched something, and this would make me think twice before using
such technology when creating content, fear the user backlash ;)
