Apple's Quicktime mpeg2 is just a decoder, not an encoder. Once you buy it it, it will just allow you to playback mpeg2 files in QT.

Instead, you can play, create and demux mpeg2 files with ffmpeg for free:

Thanks Rob,

Someone told me about bbDEMUX the other day (perhaps you) and I used it to separate the MPEG2 file.  I just looked into DiVA, and I see that tool is a transcoder; doesn't that mean I will simply be compressing the file again (albeit into another file type)?  I'd rather not lose any more quality than has already been lost in compressing to MPEG2 in the first place.  Please let me know if I'm wrong about this.

What I've discovered in the past couple of days: I *may* be able to convert the MPEG2 file to DV using a tool called MPEG Streamclip, but I'd still need to purchase Apple's Quicktime MPEG2 thing to do so.  That's another $20; perhaps there's another (less expensive) way?

Ok here we go.

All the software I mention you can find via Google, and they are all
shareware or free.

You download the MPEG2

Then you use bbDEMUX to demux it.  I'm not an expert on this, but
demux means you are separating out the video and audio portions of the
file.

You take the video portion to DiVA and you convert the file to full
720x480, 30 fps.

Then you use MAD Play to convert the audio to an AIFF.

You can then remarry the video and the audio in Final Cut or whatever
you use to edit.

I'm doing this from memory, but I think its all right.  Feel free to
e-mail off list if you run into problems.
