Yes, pop-ups are no longer assumed reliable. Firefox and Safari have pop-up blockers built in and many Windows users have the Google Toolbar installed.
A better way is for each video to have its own page, along with searchable words like a headline and description. Just because you are linking to that page using a pop-off does not mean that Google or anyone else will. It is a standalone page - a pop-off is an attempt to control use. Embedding a video into a normal "story" page works nicely.
