Why not future proof yourself and go in a widescreen format - iPods can handle 640x360 in mpeg4. File sizes are larger than H.264  but quicker to encode.

Thanks, Steve.  I did some searching based on that info. and found someone saying that
another requirement for quality video on the ipod is that the dimensions be divisible by 16.

So 512 x 384 seems to be the magic resultion.  I'm going to try some tests and ask a friend
with a video ipod to check 'em out.  Has anyone else already tried this resolution on an ipod?
