but part of me thinks... why can't we reinvent the forum to fit our needs and desires. we have so much design knowledge in this group, why can't we make something that works for US!?

preconceived notion and you are looking for data to back it up. i
recommend a more "scientific" approach.
5. your data presents a very one-dimensional view of the situation.
you do not appear to be measuring how members of this group are
interacting with others outside of this forum (i.e., this mail list is
just one of many mechanisms that we employ; I routinely communicate
with many active videobloggers who are "on the list" but rarely or never
send emails.). An obvious point: a lot of folks here have vlogs and
use those as their *primary* means of communication.
