Howdy, Just wondering if anyone here is using Vixy.net.
http://vixy.net/flv_converter Basically it can download and transcode not just Youtube videos but ANY video to just about any format. On top of it it's open source. There was some mention of it a while back on a thread regarding it's use on Dreamhost, but noone really discussed it much. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/53121 Basically, if it works well it could be HUGELY useful for consuption side i.e. viewing side services... everything from Democracy, to Fireant, to Mefeedia or Dabble... alowing such service to act similar to the Sling box in time and format shifting any video online to any networked device of your choosing wether that be a set top box, a cell phone, or any wifi enabled media player. That's my primary interest in it. Since it only does transcoding from Flash to other formats it's not that great for the production side. I.E. for videobloggers. I'm really stoked about this and was wanting to know if anyone has used it yet and how well it has worked for them. As for producers, I'm also waiting for something like this to come out that transcodes the major formats like MP4 into Flash. In this way platforms like Wordpress could impliment such a transcoding engine right into the source code so that any video you posted to your blog would automatically be available not only in the original downloadable mp4 but also a web viewable Flash version. As it is one day software like this when combined with webservices like bloglines or odeo or mefeedia could help you bring all your subscriptions to a cell phone, a pda, a set top box, or any networked media device. If it works it could be an amazing future now that wifi enabled devices like the Nokia N series are starting to support aggregation of video podcasts in limited formats. My biggest interest these days is a future where videoblogs go beyond simply the desktop. Building out the network beyond the desktop to a host of independant devices so your media and everyone's media can flow anywhere in the world wether it be a networked media player in the back seat of minivan or SUV in your garage or directly to your cell phone or PDA as you walk down the street.
