I saw this a while ago - just Googled it again - free wifi hotspots  
all across Rome.  There's a map - and they say that connection speeds  
aren't great, but that was 18 months ago and I guess it depends on  
how many other people are on:

Rome, just like New York, Philadelphia and a growing number of other  
cities around the world has just opened up a series of free wi-fi  
hotspots in the most beautiful and publicly accessible parts of the  
city.

BTW, I had trouble finding free internet places, like internet cafes.
Rome only had internet service spots for pay. But maybe you'll be
setup with access.
