Yeah, it's interesting - I rambled a reply on his site last night.

As far as I can see, he's ranting about the narrow mindedness of a
particular silicon valley crowd of web2 geeks & commentators... and
to an extent, he's right to call them on it. I mean, Justin.tv is a
bit of a wasted opportunity. BUT...

i don't really see the group he's talking about as having much of a
crossover here.

most people here are content makers - or are interested in what the
tech can *do* for us... rather than in tech for tech's sake.

and although we're still a small crowd, we have more in common with
the much larger numbers of people who will follow: some of whom
previously would have created documentaries or drama for TV with a
social agenda. It's getting much harder to get docs on TV, and
easier to get them seen online.

We, as a group - and those who will join us when the audiences grow -
do have a more outward vision, generally, than the people Eric is
complaining about.

The first things that pop into my head are Ryanishungry's green
geeks, Swajana, Alive in Baghdad.... and there are many more people
out there not just banging on about the technology, but using it for
a Social end, and giving voices to other communities, such as these
day laborers. I mean, GOD, most of us document specific things -
personal or otherwise - which have value outside tech commentary.

*Of course* the responsibility for spreading the democratising power
of these tools will lie in the hands of the content makers, not the
geeks who invent and develop the tools. We've just got to bring more
and more videomakers to the web who have something to say. I
converted one of these - a documentary maker - only yesterday.

Subject: While Web 2.0 happens, I observe day laborers
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In my rural Silicon Valley town, there are day
laborers<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_laborer>,
who line both sides of Main Street near the Caltrain station. They wait
eagerly for any work, no matter how back-breaking or menial. Some
construction crew, someone needing yardwork– anything– to get a few
extra
dollars.

I saw them this morning when I went to the grocery after dropping the
kids
off at school. I saw them again at lunch time when I went to the bank,
albeit, in much smaller numbers.

Some of them retired to the shade in the parking lot of the bank– I
didn't
see them at first until I pulled my truck into the parking lot. For a
split
second, their faces lit up. A truck!

But alas, I had no work for them. I was going to the bank.

They weren't listening to podcasts, they weren't Twittering, and I'm
pretty
sure I didn't see any webcams attached to their heads documenting the
minutia of waiting. No, I'm pretty sure I didn't.

I will stop writing now, because I want someone else to write the second
part of this article. I want someone in San Francisco at the Web
2.0conference to continue this article. I want the folks at Google to
continue
this article. Snap.com. Justin.tv. Scoble. Rubel. Arrington.
Calcanis. Pick
any names. Pick any company. Pick someone in the so-called 2.0 space

to continue this story.
