I've had occasion to ponder these issues (doing it for love vs. doing it for money) in the context of writing. I have written a lot for almost all my life, in all sorts of genres, and have gotten paid in various ways for some of it. When I left Roxio in 2001, a few dozen readers of my corporate newsletters (a very small percentage - we had 160,000 subscribers) liked my writing so much that they said they wanted to read anything else I cared to write, even if it had nothing to do with the CD-R stuff they were used to seeing from me.
So I started my website for them and for me, and it was very liberating to be able to write about whatever interested me. Over the years that has grown in all sorts of directions - in the face of the conventional wisdom that your blog should have one topic only. And it's starting to make some money. Not enough to pay the rent yet, but not to sneeze at, either. I'd love to make a living from the site, and I recognize that, consciously or unconsciously, what I choose to write about (and photograph, and video) is partly influenced by what I know about what my audience likes. Does that make me a sell-out? Boh. So far I'm still only writing about stuff I enjoy, and I suppose that counts for something. -- best regards, Deirdré Straughan living & travelling in Italy (and other Countries Beginning with I) www.beginningwithi.com Check out my latest blog post: Bersaglieri<http://www.beginningwithi.com/italy/travel/leccoevents2.html> ----Blogsigs.com <http://www.blogsigs.com>, Link your own blog posts.
